Hunt for “God Particle” Will Collide with Faith

If you are not familiar with the intensive scientific search for the Higgs boson particle, otherwise known as the “God particle,” it would be wise to keep it on your radar.

Just this week, scientists with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) near Geneva, Switzerland, announced that while the subatomic particle remains elusive, they have found “hints” of its existence.

Thus, it may soon cease to be theoretical but identifiable physical matter. The researchers hope this news will keep their financial supporters, consisting of many European nations, major corporations and universities enthusiastic about funding their multi-billion dollar experiments.

This infinitesimally small piece of physical matter will likely become a big matter indeed and could impact the lives of Christians globally. For many in the scientific community, the Higgs boson particle is the Holy Grail that will allow modern science to finally and forever trump ancient religious beliefs.

The subatomic speck is theorized to be the basic material on which the entire physical world is built. It is considered the invisible glue of the universe and one of the most mysterious missing components to the assumptions and equations about how the world really works.

British physicist Stephen Hawking, an avowed atheist, was once asked what he thought was the biggest unsolved problem in physics today: “The theory of everything…We feel we are near, but we never get there. It always seems just over the rainbow’s edge.”

CERN operates the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle accelerator, located under the Swiss-French border. The LHC consists of a 17-mile tunnel through which high-energy beams of protons are sent crashing into each other at incredible speeds. An estimated 3,000 scientists around the world collaborate in the work.

This week’s announcement was only a prelude to what I expect will be a late 2012 press conference declaring that the end of the rainbow has in fact been discovered and the “theory of everything” can now be neatly understood via a new field of metaphysical mysticism.

The paradox of it all is that the “God particle” will likely be used in an attempt to undermine the very existence of God—even though any discovery will fail to explain how the Higgs boson particle originated in the first place.

CERN is subsidized by tax dollars from the many European nations that are already teetering on financial ruin. This type of government-subsidized research is just another example of how taxes are being utilized to exalt the wisdom of man and discredit the existence of God. But we have nothing to fear. Our God created every particle in the universe, and I am confident His fingerprints will ultimately be found on each and every one.

My perspective on Hawking’s stated desire for a “theory of everything” aligns with that of the late astronomer, Fred Hoyle. He said, “I have always thought it curious that, while most scientists claim to eschew religion, it actually dominates their thoughts more than it does the clergy.”

Hoyle noted that beneath the experiments, equations and scientific methodology is a near-religious desire to challenge God’s claim as both the Creator and Sustainer of all matter and all life.

I’m just a simple man, and certainly not as learned as these esteemed scientists, but I believe the “theory of everything” is not hidden or elusive. God has made His claim as Creator of the universe plainly known. The apostle Paul discovered the true God particle some 2,000 years ago:

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

The invisible God not only made the Higgs boson particle, He made all other matter!

Although they will never stop trying, the world’s elite scientists will fail to displace the supremacy of Jesus Christ as the glue to the universe, regardless of what they discover in their underground Tower of Babel.

“And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”

“Emmanuel—God with us” is the only discovery that will once and for all explain everything to believers and skeptics alike.
