If you have ever wondered why you should tithe, the answer is simple. You should tithe because the money that you earn is not yours. Yes, your name is on the paycheck. However, it all belongs to God. He is the one who gave you the skills and the talents to be able to do your job. Without these you would not be able to earn a living. When you came into this world, you had nothing. When you die, you will take nothing with you. Whatever money you accumulate in this world is only yours for a very short time, your lifespan. God makes you the steward of His resources during your lifetime. Then, when He calls you home, He appoints someone else as the steward of that money.
To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it (Deuteronomy 10:14).
For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10).
The world is mine, and all that is in it (Psalm 50:12).
“The silver is mine and the gold is mine,” declares the LORD Almighty (Haggai 2:8).
For everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all (1 Chronicles 29:11).
So you see, God is being extremely generous to you. He is asks you for only one tenth (tithe) of the resources He has given you. Does He want you to give more? He leaves that up to you. However, He does want you to be generous with His resources. Instead of hoarding the money, He wants you to meet the needs of others less well off than you. He wants you to donate your time, talents, and skills to helping the needy of this world. He will take care of your needs. Learn to give at least a tenth. Then, slowly start increasing your giving. God will prosper you.
Also, don’t tithe on your net income. Your tithe should come from your first fruits, your gross pay.
“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.
“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’
“In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty. (Malachi 3:8-12 )
